Edward Monroe Tanner
11.
Edward Monroe Tanner
was born in New Madrid, Missouri in 1815 - his
father was the son of a Calvinist preacher. He first arrived in Texas in 1827, at
the age of 12, with his father and two younger brothers after his mother died in
child birth, and settled in what is now Liberty County. He was elected a member
of the local safety committee in 1835, making him a lower official of the Mexican
government, while not yet twenty. In 1836 he enlisted in Logan's Company of Liberty
Volunteers and fought at the Battle of San Jacinto under Sidney Sherman. He returned
home and received his land grant for service in the Texas army in May 1838.
In the early 1860s, Edward enlisted in the Confederate army, first as a private in
the Louisiana-based Wheat's Infantry Battalion, then later in the Texas State
Infantry. It is unknown how long he served, but after he was discharged he
returned home to Liberty County where he lived the rest of his days.
